In October 1870, Ned was arrested again for assaulting a merchant, Jeremiah McCormack, and sentenced to six months’ hard labor.
Upon his release, ⓒ he returned home. He and his brother Dan became outlaws. The brothers hid in the vast, tree-choked expanse of the Wombat Ranges, east of Melbourne, where they were joined by their brothers Joe and Steve. The Kelly gang was formed.

Ned Kelly expert Ian Jones said every country has a “hero rebel figure” in the style of Robin Hood, and Ned Kelly’s impressive, strong figure fit that style almost perfectly.
