흉가에서 겁에 질린 소년들

When Tom and Huck reached the haunted house, there was something so weird about the dead silence, and something so depressing about the loneliness and desolation of the place, that they were afraid, for a moment, to venture inside. They crept to the door and looked through its window. They saw a weed-grown room, an ancient fireplace, vacant windows, a ruinous staircase; and here, there, and everywhere hung ragged and abandoned cobwebs. They entered, softly, with quickened pulses, talking in whispers, ears alert to catch the slightest sound, and muscles tense and ready for instant retreat.
As they grew used to the house, they became less scared, and they decided to explore. They wanted to look upstairs, so they went to the staircase and made the (A) . Up there were the same signs of decay. In one corner they found a closet that promised mystery, but the promise was a (B) —there was nothing in it. They were about to go down and begin work when—“Shh!” said Tom. “What is it?” whispered Huck. “Shh! ... There! ... Hear it?” “Yes! ... Oh, my! Let’s run!” “Keep still! Don’t budge! Tom과 Huck이 그 흉가에 도착했을 때, 그곳의 죽은 듯한 정적에는 뭔가 너무 기이한 느낌이 있었고, 그 장소의 적막과 황량함에는 매우 우울한 뭔가가 있어서, 그들은 잠시 동안 안으로 들어가기를 두려워했다. 그들은 문으로 살금살금 다가가 창문을 통해 안을 들여다보았다. 그들은 잡초가 자란 방, 오래된 벽난로, 텅 빈 창문들, 쓰러져 가는 계단을 보았고, 여기저기 거의 모든 곳에 다 해지고 버려진 거미줄이 걸려 있었다. 그들은 조용히 들어갔다. 맥박은 빨라지고, 속삭이듯 말하면서, 귀는 아주 작은 소리도 놓치지 않게 쫑긋 세우고, 언제든 도망갈 수 있도록 근육은 긴장된 채였다.
그 집에 차츰 익숙해지자 그들은 두려움이 잦아들어 그곳을 살펴보기로 했다. 그들은 위층이 보고 싶어서 계단으로 가서는 위로 올라갔다. 위층에도 동일한 쇠퇴의 흔적이 있었다. 한쪽 구석에서 그들은 수수께끼가 있을 듯한 벽장을 발견했지만, 그러한 징조는 가짜였다. 그 안에는 아무것도 없었다. 그들은 아래로 내려가서 다시 탐험을 시작하려고 했는데, 그때 “쉬!”라고 Tom이 말했다. “뭐야?” Huck이 속삭였다. “쉬! … 저기! … 들려?” “응! … 이런! 도망가자!” “가만히 있어! 꼼짝 마! 그들이 문쪽으로 오고 있어.” 소년들은 바닥에 납작 엎드려서 바닥 나무판자에 있는 구멍에 눈을 대고, 끔찍한 공포 속에서 기다렸다. “그들이 멈췄어……. 아냐, 오고 있어……. 그들이 왔어. 한 마디도 더 하지 마, Huck. 이런, 다른 곳에 있었으면 좋겠어!”
