물리학의 현대적 발전에 미치지 못하는 철학

Is Western philosophy dead? The late Stephen Hawking, the most renowned physicist and cosmologist of our time, said as much. This is what he asserted at the beginning of The Grand Design (2010): “Humans are a curious species. We wonder, we seek answers. Living in this world that is by turns kind and cruel, and gazing at the immense heavens above, people have always asked a multitude of questions: How can we understand the world in which we find ourselves? How does the universe behave? What is the nature of reality? Where did all this come from? Did the universe need a creator?” Most of us do not spend most of our time worrying about these questions, but almost all of us worry about them some of the time. Traditionally, these are questions for philosophy, but philosophy is dead. Philosophy has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics. Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge. The problem as he sees it seems clear. Knowledge in physics has grown by leaps and bounds. Philosophy has been unable to keep up.

서양 철학은 죽었는가? 우리 시대의 가장 저명한 물리학자이자 우주론자인 고(故) Stephen Hawking은 그렇게 말했다. 그는 (자신의 저서) 『위대한 설계 (2010)』의 시작 부분에서 이렇게 주장했다. “인간은 호기심이 많은 종(種)이다. 우리는 궁금해하고, 답을 찾으려 한다. 친절과 잔혹함이 차례로 교차하는 이 세상에서 살아가면서, 머리위의 광대한 하늘을 바라보며, 사람들은 항상 많은 질문을 해왔다. 우리가 처한 이 세계를 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까? 우주는 어떻게 작동할까? 현실의 본질은 무엇일까? 이 모든 것들은 어디서 왔을까? 우주는 창조자가 필요했을까?” 대부분 사람들은 이러한 질문들에 대해 고민하며 대부분의 시간을 보내지는 않지만, 거의 모두가 때때로는 그 질문들에 대해 고민을 한다. 전통적으로 이러한 질문들은 철학을 위한 질문이었지만, 철학은 죽었다. 철학은 현대 과학, 특히 물리학의 발전을 따라가지 못했다. 과학자들이 우리의 지식 탐구에 있어 발견의 선구자(=발견의 횃불을 든 사람)들이 되었다. 그(Hawking)가 보기에 문제는 명확해 보인다. 물리학의 지식은 급속도로 성장해왔다. 철학은 (물리학 지식의 성장을) 따라가지 못했다.
