본질주의와 과학적 설명

“Discerning the essence of things” is usually interpreted as meaning that one has identified what is most important. However, the phrase’s familiarity should not lead us to forget that the word “essence” is a vestige of a substantive philosophical doctrine, one that has exercised a considerable influence on metaphysics, both ancient and modern. Essentialism is a doctrine about natural kinds. Gold is a kind of thing; there are many samples of gold, and they are quite different from each other. In the light of this diversity among gold things, how should science endeavor to understand what gold is? The essentialist replies that science aims to discover properties that are separately necessary and jointly sufficient for being gold. If every piece of gold has a particular atomic number, and only gold has that atomic number, then that atomic number may be considered the essence of gold. Discovery of essences is not an idle exercise—it is fundamental to science’s search for explanation. We understand what gold is by seeing what all gold things have in common. Understood in this way, the existence of variation within a kind is a distraction from what is important. Gold things vary from each other, but this variation needs to be set aside. Variation is a veil that we must see through if we are to see what is important.

[해석]

‘사물의 본질을 분별하는 것’은 대개 가장 중요한 것을 파악했다는 의미로 해석된다. 그러나 이 문구의 친숙함 때문에 우리는 ‘본질’이라는 단어가 고대와 현대의 형이상학에 상당한 영향을 미쳤던 실질적인 철학적 교리의 잔재라는 것을 잊어서는 안 된다. 본질주의는 자연종에 대한 교리이다. 금은 사물에 속하는 종류로, 금의 표본들은 다양하고 서로 매우 다르다. 금으로 된 것들간의 이러한 다양성에 비추어 볼 때, 과학은 금이 무엇인지 이해하기 위해 어떻게 노력해야 할까? 본질주의자는, 과학은 금이 되는 데 개별적으로 필수적이면서도 공동으로 충분한 속성을 발견하는 것을 목표로 한다고 답한다. 만일 모든 금 조각이 특정 원자 번호를 가지고 있고, 오직 금만이 그 원자 번호를 가지고 있다면, 그 원자 번호가 금의 본질로 간주될 수도 있다. 본질을 발견하는 것은 별 볼일 없는 일이 아니다. 그것은 과학의 설명 추구에 있어 본질적인 행위이다. 우리는 모든 금으로 된 것들이 공통으로 가지고 있는 것을 보고 금이 무엇인지 이해한다. 이런 식으로 이해하면, 한 종류 내에서 변이가 존재하는 것은, 중요한 것으로 부터 주의를 뺏는 역할을 한다. 금으로 된 것들은 서로 다르지만, 이러한 변이는 제쳐둘 필요가 있다. 변이는, 우리가 중요한 것을 보려면 반드시 꿰뚫어 봐야 하는 장막일 뿐이다.
